-First American to learn Pansori and Pansori Drum technique from Moon, Oak Joo.

Biography

She grew up in Chapel Hill NC and holds a BFA in Drama from the UNC School of the Arts. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild, an Associate Member of Stage Directors & Choreographers, as well as an original member of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, New York Theater Workshop's Usual Suspects, and The Women's Project & Productions Directors Forum.
She worked intensively with Open Theater director Joseph Chaikin in the early 1980’s, trained with Ariane Mnouchkine and le Theatre du Soleil in Paris, and with Robert Langdon Lloyd of Peter Brooks company for two years as a member of his Shakespeare Event workshop at La Mama in NYC. She also trains and performs in Butoh dance. Monika is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique since 1985 and a Teaching Member of Alexander Technique International and served on the faculty of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University from 2011-12.
In NYC, Monika was Artistic Director of Theatreworkers (1982-90), directing many original productions, and of Smarty Pants Theatre (1990-2001), where she directed and performed in her own plays and adaptations. She is currently Artistic Director of At-A-Site Theater, creating theater in unusual spaces and in familiar spaces in unusual ways, arranging theater and audiences to meet unexpectedly. She is curating and performing in At-A-Site’s Summer Project 2014: Celebrating the Birthdays of Dead Writers, a daily street performance in Asheville and in New York City, where short selections from the works of dead writers on their birthdays are offered to be read to random passersby. Over 60 writers were presented in our first season.

Biography

Michael McInerney has been studying Pansori under Moon, Oak Joo via skype since 2012. Michael lives in Melbourne, Australia and has been passionate about Pansori since first hearing while studying a music degree in 2007. Upon first hearing Pansori, Michael knew that he must start searching for a teacher, he did so, to no avail for five years until Moon, Oak Joo agreed to take him on.

Michael works playing double bass in jazz and world music styles in and around Melbourne and uses his previous musical training to study Pansori in great depth. He believes that the sound of Pansori is:'the sound of the human heart, with all of its joy and sorrow included'. Michael wants to gain as much as possible of the Pansori tradition from Moon, Oak Joo. He has said that he feels honoured to be taught by such a good teacher and supported by her family even though they have all only met over skype. Michael feels privileged to have such good guidance and the opportunity to grow and develop his Pansori skills.

Biography

Lee, Myeong Jin graduated Kwang Ju High School of Arts which is located in south western part of South Korea in 1988, the home of Pansori and traditional Korean performing arts. She then, attended Jhun Nam University of Arts in Juhla Namdo, South Korea while majored in Korean Traditional Baboo Flute and minored in Pansori. During her school years in Jhun Nam University of Arts, she was accepted to Kwang Ju Korean Traditional Arts Orchestra as the top ranked member for Korean Bamboo Flute, and she also became the top ranked member of Woo Rhee Soh Rhee Research Organization (Prominent Pansori Research Organization).

After her graduation from Jhun Nam University of Arts in 1992, she again got accepted to Kwang Ju Orchestra as the top ranked member. She then, became the top ranked member for Korean Traditional Arts Auditorium Orchestra 'Yuh~Eum". She also served as a host for KBS (Korean National Television Station) kids' program 'Mo Eeh Jah No Le Ha Jah' (Come Together, Let's Sing).

Currently, she is furnishing her skills to participate in many upcoming events that are held in New York. Moon, Oak Joo has high expectations for her, and can't wait for Lee, Myeong Jin to be a part of many wonderful top notch Pansori performances that are to come.

Pansori and Pansori Drum Student & Korean String Instruments Player:   Yi, Sunabi

-Currently learning Pansori and Pansori Drum technique under Moon, Oak Joo.

Biography

Sunabi Yi was first exposed to the Korean culture by her father, who is a chef and an amateur opera singer, at the age of four. She has been fortunate to learn Korean Traditional Dance and Music.

Before learning Korean dance, she has been doing ballet. Ballet has taught her the basics to most of the dance positions. Throughout the years, she began to learn traditional singing with the accompaniment of the Gayageum, a 12 string zither. Piano has also been the fundamental of her music reading for the Gayageum and the Gomungo, a six string zither instrument. She has been influenced in many Korean Traditional string instruments, including the 25 stringed Gayageum. She won first place in the 11th and 13th World Korean Traditional Competition.

Along with the learning of Korean Traditional Arts, Sunabi has been trained for classical(Opera) and broadway singing. She was accepted to a classical music program to Italy to learn more about the singing techniques.
Currently under Bayside High School, 11th grade, at age 16, Sunabi is in the Principal Honor Roll and she is very active in the Red Cross. She also has established the Korean Arts Club for every student to experience the culture of Korea. Her goal is to spread knowledge and connect people with the arts. Sunabi Yi received many certificates: Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from U.S Congress and New York State Congress and Certificate of Community Service from New York City Council member.
